I just started playing a few days ago. After having to restart about 60 or so times, I finally managed to get up to this bit.
But how the hell was I supposed to know that you needed to search for some shiny object,
before talking with Curly!?
Now I've started a new game.

Before the Core battle, look through the lower area of the arena. There should be a sparkling item there. Take it (it's the Tow Rope), and after the battle, examine Curly. You should be given an option to take her with you. Make sure not to miss the little cabin in the Waterway, though; go in and lay her down on the bed. Examine the computer, then the bookshelf, then Curly. Once that's done, examine Curly twice more and take her with you.
